Food storage & leftovers

Practical information to inform purchasing and consumption decisions to reduce impact of food waste on the environment and associated food costs in line with Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Food storage tips

Use the information below to provide guidance on storing meat to avoid food waste and associated costs in line with Australian Dietary Guidelines [1]. For example, when buying meat in bulk or single person households.

How to freeze meat

  •  •  Trim fat from steaks or level out mince and separate into meal portions for even defrosting.
     •  Put into airtight plastic freezer bags, then seal removing any excess air from the bag.
     •  Label with cut name, weight and date - and freeze!
     •  Freeze up to the recommended storage time for your specific cut.

*Never refreeze defrosted meat, this is a food safety risk!

How to thaw meat

  •  •  Separate portioned cuts, if required, keeping meat covered with freezer packaging.
     •  Place red meat in a dish on the lowest fridge shelf.
     •  Defrost meat in the fridge until completely thawed.
